About your communicating loving part - we do things all the time to express that love, be it a phone call, coming to visit, going out somewhere with them, helping out, doing things for them, remembering their birthday and when overseas sending letters post cards, emails, phone calls... lots of little everyday things to show that we are thinking of them, that we care about them.

There are times when the A and the R can be useful for goal setting. especially if you are setting short term goals, I think that the idea behind that is that you get to feel the success of achieving your goal and so you go onto make the next goal. Long term goals are a different story.
I also question measurable, just because you can measure it easily is it worth having. Many things that are useful are measurable such as money earned, increase in customers etc. there are somethings you can attempt to measure such as customer satisfaction, employee productivity and happiness but these things are very hard to get an accurate measurement but are also very important to a business.
SMART goals should be used for some goals in certain circumtances but I do not think they should be used for all goals at all times, but then again it depends on whats important to you.

Thanks for the mention - it's exactly the same as Bill Gates planning 10 years ahead, it meant he could always in the back of his mind frame what he has now and how he can work towards the 10 year picture.

Cheers Hamish.
This is a bit of an old post of mine – need to close this blog down since everythings moved over too http://blog.robbiemackay.com now.

My attitudes changed a bit since writing this post. I don’t think that money is more valuable than the skills/time I can provide.
Mostly just think its important to keep thinking about how else you can make a difference…
Especially working out how to make the biggest difference with the time I’ve got available.
